SAORI LOOM - 2019/2020
“Saori Rag Bands”
According to Zen principles, Sai represents the individual dignity inherent in all things, while Ori refers to the process of weaving. Initiated by Misao Jo (1913-2018) in 1969 in Osaka, Japan, the Saori movement reimagines weaving as a path to spontaneity and self-expression. Unlike traditional weaving, which is rooted in structure, order, and the transmission of established techniques, Saori emphasizes the organic unfolding of one’s authentic self. The philosophy behind Saori celebrates "mistakes" not as errors but as catalysts for creative freedom, self-discovery, and abundance. This approach champions the use of recycled, repurposed and upcycled materials, embracing a minimal waste mindset that transforms what would be discarded into meaningful creations.
